Tsundere is... Tsundere and yandere are archetypes of Japanese pop culture

[edit] Character traits

Hurricanes have one interesting feature: their center is always calm. This hurricane is exactly what yandere is. For those who are close to the yandere, she is practically safe and may even seem like a completely normal girl. However, everyone else can easily be hit by a roof flying in a hurricane when trying to get closer. Of course, trying to first get close to a yandere and then move on to another one will have the same effect. Yanderes start out as normal and even cute characters, but at some point they become wedged, and their behavior radically changes to cruel and dangerous, and sometimes hysteria is not enough, and yanderes reach for knives, katanas, daggers, machetes, boxcutters and other dangerous objects .

[edit] Archetype subtypes

  • Yandere
    is madly in love, behaves ideally towards her lover, is ready to make any sacrifices for him and endure anything for the sake of him and their relationship, kill a couple of everyday girlfriends crossing the road or protect him with her body.
  • Yangire
    is a subspecies of yandere with mental disabilities.
    They are cute on the outside, but cruel and crazy on the inside. Unlike yanderes, they do not need a special reason in the form of love to massacre. These are characters suffering from psychosis, but not always
    inclined to kill others (some, for example, closed in on themselves and later tried to commit suicide).

Defining an Archetype

There is a large selection of character archetypes in anime and manga, and if the male ones are mostly reduced to the “ordinary Japanese schoolboy,” then among the female ones there is diversity. Thus, tsunderes (female characters who show their love by intentionally mocking the object of their adoration) and kudere (distant, apathetic girls) are popular. Yandere is on a par with them; Yanderes are loved by male otaku who watch anime for certain traits of their behavior.

A yandere is a mentally unstable character, most often a girl. Her behavior is justified by her strong love, for the sake of which the previously harmless schoolgirl is ready to commit violence. In especially advanced cases, she is ready to kill for her beloved young man; this type of yandere has its own name and is called yangire .

Among anime fans, yanderes gained their popularity for:

  • the spectacle of murders, which are extremely bloody;
  • bright appearance;
  • motivation in the form of immense love.

If we summarize the above, then identifying a yandere among other types of heroes will be simple: if a female character in an anime is the embodiment of evil , most likely she is a yandere. In the case when boys dream about how great it would be if “my girlfriend was ready to kill for me,” they dream about a yandere.

[edit] Examples

There are enough examples.
There is no need to add anything else here. No, really.
  • Ryoko Asakura from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya;
  • Sakura from Fate/stay night (spoiler:
    but only in her third route, which rather breaks the mold after the first two routes, where she seems to be nothing more than a minor shy dunderee
    )
    ;
  • Suiginto, Barasuisho and Kirakisho from Rozen Maiden;
  • Kotonoha and Sekai from School Days;

Rena from Higurashi

  • Lucy from Elfen Lied, (spoiler:
    although she has a split personality
    )
    ;
  • Mai-HiME's Shizuru Fujino;
  • Vincent Nightray from Pandora Hearts;
  • Gasai Yuno from Mirai Nikki;
  • Lena in Miku's ending from Endless Summer;
  • Ayano Aishi from yandere simulator;
  • Kaede from Shuffle!;
  • Allenby Beardsley from G Gundam;
  • Namie Yagiri and Haruna Niekawa from Durarara!;
  • Takami Minatsu from Deadman Wonderland;
  • Sails Mizuhashi from Toha;
  • Natalia Arlovskaya from Hetalia;
  • Yukako Yamagishi from Zhizhi;
  • A non-anime example of a yandere: a Plymouth Fury named "Christine" from King's "Christine".

1. Future Diary

Well, I think everyone already knows this wonderful anime, but I think I’ll still leave it here. Yandere - Yuno Gasai

description

Amano Yukiteru is extremely indecisive, withdrawn, uncommunicative and observant. He practically does not participate in the events happening around him, but he notices them all and writes them down in his diary. He has an imaginary friend named Deus Ex Machina, who works as a master of time and space.

But Deus, it turns out, really exists, and Yuki’s diary becomes a “diary of the future”, which shows everything that will happen around Amano. This is the game that Deus started. A game in which whoever wins will become the new god. But Yukiteru is not the only one whom Deus endowed with the “gift of all-vision.” There are 12 of them in total. Everyone wants to become a god to change this world.

2. Ayase Aragaki from "My Little Sister Can't Be That Cute" can't be such a yandere

description

The Kosaka family is the most ordinary unit of Japanese society. The father is a strict police official, the mother is a skilled housewife, 14-year-old Kirino is an athlete and an excellent student, 17-year-old Kyosuke is a home-grown philosopher. The guy has repeatedly wondered why over the last few years his sister has distanced herself from him, reduced communication to a minimum and suppressed all attempts to just talk? As a result, he wisely decided not to delve into the secrets of a woman’s soul and wait until the situation resolves itself. It was resolved - when Kyosuke found a box of maho-shojo anime at home, which included a game for adults! Putting two and two together, the young detective figured out the owner, and as a reward was woken up in the middle of the night by a strong slap in the face from his dear sister...

Who would be surprised - the culprit of the night awakening turned out to be a secret otaku with a pronounced sister complex. Being a beauty of a rather European type (80-54-85, 160), Kirino has been working as a model for a long time, and spends her fees on a collection of anime and eroge dedicated to the relationships of heroines with their older brothers. It was then that Kyosuke understood the meaning of the word “sublimation,” but to his sister’s desperate protests he calmly replied that he wanted to understand her, and in any case he would keep the secret. The word is not a sparrow, and Kirino immediately announced that her brother would be able to understand only by playing erotic games together! Will the hero be able to survive and improve his relationship with his sister, plunging into the frightening world of anime, manga, eroge and cosplay - we will soon find out!

3. Kurumi Tokisaki from Rendezvous With

Description

Life" will arrange a deadly date for you

April 10th. The last day of spring break ended yesterday and school started this morning. In the morning, his sweet little sister woke him up.

“The most ordinary start to the day,” thought Itsuka Shido. He could not even imagine that he would meet a spirit girl...

The city disappeared without a trace, covered by a sudden shock wave. On the corner of the street, which already looked like a crater, stood a girl.

-Have you come to kill me too?

She is a scourge rejected by the world, one who will destroy humanity, a monster of unknown origin. There are only two ways to stop this girl: destruction and negotiation. Shido's younger sister, Kotori, dressed in a military uniform, told him:

- Invite her on a date and make her fall in love!

“Wha...What-o-o-o-o-o-o?!”

The beginning of a new century. A guy meets a spirit girl!

4. Kotonoha Katsura from School Days probably still carries her lover's head with her in her bag

description

Makoto Ito is a simple Japanese schoolboy who is used to going with the flow. Feeling like an unremarkable guy, he cannot even speak to the pretty Kotonoha, whom he often meets on the morning train. That’s how it all would have ended if it weren’t for Sekai Saionji’s lively classmate, who, seeing her neighbor’s suffering, out of the kindness of her heart, decided to help him arrange matters of the heart. But does this help go too far? And why does almost half of the high school girls begin to show an unhealthy interest in Ito? What, finally, does the main character think and how does he act?

5. Ren Ryuga from “When Cicadas Cry” was driven to act rashly by hallucinations

description

Arriving in the hot summer of 1983 in the village of Hinamizawa, located in a secluded mountain valley, you might think that you had finally found a calm haven. In any case, this is exactly what Keiichi Maebara thought, having exchanged noisy city everyday life for quiet rural evenings, the peace of which is disturbed only by the singing of cicadas. The friendly residents, who know each other and are so welcoming to the new residents, seem like the nicest people. And like all good people, they are in no hurry to reveal to newcomers those aspects of village life that are not customary to talk about out loud. Is it worth insisting on such knowledge at all?..

6. Sion Sonozaki from When the Cicadas Cry was always second only to her older twin sister.

description

This Yandere is from the same anime, sorry, but there will be another similar description: sweet_smile:

7. Shoko Kirishima from “Fools, Tests, Avatars”

description

17-year-old Yoshi Akihisa, an indecently simple guy whom those around him call “fool” behind his back, studies at Fumizuki Academy, where the principle of “to each according to his mind” is taken to its logical conclusion. Everything is decided by the test results, as a result, the geniuses and crammers from class “A” enjoy the wonders of comfort and technology, while the slackers and loafers from class “F” sit in an office with broken windows and the equipment of a pre-war rural school. Only one day, the smart and beautiful Himeji Mizuki, due to a cold, could not finish the exam and fell to the bottom of the school. Akihisa, her longtime admirer, could not tolerate the injustice and raised his native class “F” to a decisive struggle for supremacy in the academy.

The most interesting thing is that in Fumizuki “school wars” are allowed and even encouraged, because they are not waged by the students themselves, but by miniature avatars called by them, whose strength is again measured by the results of the owner’s tests. Everyone can fight, the winner goes to the top, the loser slides down the hierarchical ladder. And it doesn’t matter that the avatars of Akihisa and his friends are still frankly weak - a noble goal, friendship and teamwork will help them break through the ranks of excellent individual students. And strength doesn’t lie in tests—it lies in the truth!

8. Sayaka Miki just went a little crazy because of a friend who stole the love of her life from her. Try to exist in the harsh world of Magical Girl Madoka

description

There are magical creatures in the world who can fulfill any wish of the girl they choose. However, after this she must become a magical girl and fight witches - evil creatures generated by curses and using their power to sow chaos and despair. Schoolgirl Kaname Madoka and her friend Miki Sayaka received an offer... to become magical girls from the sorceress Tomoe Mami and the mysterious white and fluffy animal Kyubey - the owner of a pair of unusual ears. But another magical girl, Akemi Homura, is trying with all her might to prevent Madoka from concluding a contract with him...

9. Rika Furude from “When Cicadas Cry” turned out to be not as Yanderist as her friends, but cutting her throat at the fifth stage of “Hanamizawa Syndrome” turned out to be nowhere easier for her

10. Suiginto from “The Rose Maiden” is used to always being a loner

Description

Jun Sakurada is a second-year high school student who has become a hikikomori and practically never leaves home; he amuses himself by shopping for various mystical things over the Internet. His parents work abroad, which seems to Jun as yet another proof that no one really needs him. He has a sister, Nori, who tries to take care of him, but receives only rudeness and ignorance in return.

One day, thoughtlessly, a strange letter appeared in his hands with the words “Will you turn? You won’t turn it around” and shipping instructions (put in a desk drawer). Having thoughtlessly selected the “Turn” option, Jun discovered among the incoming parcels a strange chest, which contained an unusually beautiful doll. He started the doll with the key that was in the chest, and the doll came to life. Shinku, the fifth of Rosen Maiden's magical dolls, immediately showed the boy her character by slapping him in the face for daring to touch the lady without her permission.

Jun very quickly realized that dealing with Rosen Maiden dolls was life-threatening, having been attacked by an unknown enemy literally minutes after the fateful turn of the key. In exchange for saving his life, he was forced to swear an oath of fidelity to Shinku, becoming her medium and servant. From that moment on, Jun became a full participant in the mysterious events associated with magic dolls made in ancient times by the legendary puppeteer Rosen.

The plot presented in the anime and in the manga, despite the presence of similar elements, is very different, both in the events that directly occur and in the past of the characters.

Popular yandere characters

Lucy (Elfen Lied)

A young girl distinguished by her beauty and cunning, and also by the fact that she is the Eve of a new species called Diclonius . Lucy did not want to fulfill her role as a mother, and human scientists agreed with her on this. Therefore, Lucy escaped from the research center, which was a prison for Diclonius. Another reason she ran away was because of Kouta, a boy Lucy met as a child.

Lucy's distinctive traits as a yandere are:

  • her appearance is pink hair and bone horns;
  • split personality;
  • an unusual way of killing people: according to the manga and anime, Lucy grows invisible vector hands with which she shreds her offenders.

It is for the bloody show and tearful backstory that Lucy is loved among anime fans.

Natalia Arlovskaya (Hetalia)

The Hetalia anime franchise is built on the humanization of countries and states, and Natalya has become the living embodiment of Belarus. Modest, smart and quiet, Natalya Arlovskaya is ready to do anything to “become one” with “brother Russia”.

(Russia in Hetalia, being a strong character, acquired a male gender).

Natalya can hardly be called a typical example of the yandere archetype, but she is unique in that she does not arrange bloody battles. She is simply trying to starve Russia out and force herself to fall in love, simultaneously scaring everyone around her.

Yuno Gasai (Mirai Nikki)

A schoolgirl who seeks to protect her lover Yukiteru in a brutal battle for the title of God of the New World. For his own good - and often against the wishes of Yukiteru himself - Yuno Gasai chooses rather methods, not shying away from violence and murder.

The anime Mirai Nikki was released in 2011, and Yuno Gasai personally revived the love of otaku for yanderes. Despite the fact that there was nothing unusual in the unremarkable appearance - two pink ponytails and a crazy look - and excessive bloodshed, anime fans once again raised their head, finding a new goddess in the person of Yuno Gasai.

Ayano "Yandere-chan" Aisha (Yandere Simulator)

A student at an ordinary Japanese school, Academy High, in love with her Senpai. In fact, Ayano Aishi is the main character of the game Yandere Simulator , which is currently in development. The essence of the game is to eliminate rivals in Senpai's heart, and the possibilities of the game in this regard are endless. Using their twisted mind, the player - and by extension Ayano Aishi - can:

  • burn your opponent alive;
  • electrocute her;
  • cut;
  • and also set up several other schoolgirls along the way, breaking their psyches with torture.

Ayano Aisha's actions in the game are so brutal that Yandere Simulator was banned from streaming on Twitch. Let's plays on YouTube are released only if there is censorship . Despite this and its incompleteness in terms of plot and gameplay, Yandere Simulator is extremely popular. Cause? Many otaku want to play as a yandere character and are ready to ignore the claims of moralists for this.

Like Yuno Gasai in 2011, Ayano Aishi already in 2014 raised a new wave of yandere popularity, displacing Yuno Gasai from her pedestal as the queen of bloody massacres.

Worth mentioning

  • Bianchi (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!)
  • Rize Kamishiro (Tokyo Ghoul)
  • Tooru Mitsuki (Tokyo Ghoul:re)
  • Anna Nishikonomiya (Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai)
  • Shion Sonozaki (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)
  • Chiri Kitsu (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei)
  • Minatsuki Takami (Deadman Wonderland)
  • Yukako Yamagishi (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai)

A special mention goes to Sadako Yamamura, otherwise known as the long-haired girl from the Ring . Despite the bitterness and unpleasantness of her killing methods, she cannot be considered a yandere, since she is not in love, and being in love is a mandatory factor in determining the archetype.

The past two years have seen a decline in the popularity of violent schoolgirls in anime culture. However, given the trends of the past decade, anime fans are already waiting for the emergence of a new yandere girl who will revive this archetype. And it looks like the wait won't be long.

Archetype Subtypes

  • Yandere
    is madly in love, behaves ideally towards her lover, is ready to make any sacrifices for him and endure anything for the sake of him and their relationship, kill a couple of everyday girlfriends crossing the road or protect him with her body.
  • Yangire
    is a subspecies of yandere with mental disabilities.
    They are cute on the outside, but cruel and crazy on the inside. Unlike yanderes, they do not need a special reason in the form of love to massacre. These are characters suffering from psychosis, but not always
    inclined to kill others (some, for example, closed in on themselves and later tried to commit suicide).

Subtypes

Tsundere is one of the six main character archetypes, but not all heroes fit into a strict classification. Characters who are in many ways reminiscent of a tsundere, but who deviate significantly from the canon, are assigned to subtypes, which can number up to ten. Let's look at some of them.

tsundere yandere kudere dandere

Tsunaho (tsundoji, tsunbaka) is a character who tries to look cold and reserved, but due to his natural absent-mindedness and clumsiness it turns out poorly. Tsunaho often looks stupid and gets into ridiculous situations.

Tsuntere is a softer, shy version (here the second part of the word is derived from “tereru” - shy). Natural modesty prevents the character from looking openly cold and arrogant, and the object of warm feelings can easily embarrass him.

Tsundora is the most cold, unemotional character, and it is difficult to awaken his soft side. A good example is Senjougahara from A History of Monsters.

Tsungire – here the ending is formed from the word “kireru”, which means short circuit. Such a hero is seemingly indifferent, but he gradually accumulates emotions within himself, which over time can lead to a real explosion.

Tsongshun is a character in whom a surge of negative emotions is replaced not by a manifestation of gentleness, but by depression.

Dandere

Representatives of this type are also silent and withdrawn, but not because they are emotionless. On the contrary, dandere are overwhelmed by feelings, but such heroes are overly shy. They are often simply ashamed of their feelings and try to hide them. Dandere may avoid the company of other people, preferring books to communication. People often trust their innermost thoughts to a diary.

what does tsundere mean?

Dandere are often economical girls. Due to shyness, they experience great difficulties in communicating, especially with the opposite sex. Typical representatives: Hyuuga Hinata (“Naruto”), Shiomiya Shiori (“The World God Only Knows”), Onodera Kosaki (“Fake Love”).
