«Elvish Song is perhaps the best thing I've seen. Not only is there blood, a kawaii creature and even love. But the most important thing is that there are thoughts about human cruelty, because the Diclonius were born precisely because of it. This is one of those things that I can add to the top. »

[edit] What is this, Barrymore?

The brief essence of EL in a kind and humane song from the vocalist of “Complex Numbers”

« My name is Ira, I’m 9 years old, I’m from the village of Minovo, Ukraine, I’m in fourth grade, an excellent student, I really love anime and the Jetix channel, my favorite anime are Naruto, Shaman King, Winx, Sorceresses and Sonic X, but most of all I like anime Elvish Song

[edit] Manga

Essentially, it's a dozen volumes of coloring pictures filled with little more than entirely erotic fanservice and violence, most of them involving the main character. Unfortunately, no one has yet been able to find meaning in all these pictures. But the search continues!

[edit] Anime

Drama, Angst, Bizumye!
The anime is a typical harem with a simple plot, made entirely of templates, cliches and fan service, among which, for some unknown reason, fantasies pop up on the theme of the very satisfying artist G. Klimt. We shouldn't have expected anything else from the film adaptation of the above-mentioned manga. Nevertheless, the creators of the series managed to take fan service to unprecedented heights, and in addition to the standard panty shots or “accidental” boob grabbing, they made some real guro fan service. The worst thing is that the anime now has a semblance of a plot. And people who watch this anime either begin to hate it or adore it

The plot was obtained by simply separating with a file and a titanium crowbar from the entire mass of events in the manga only those events that in some way relate to the main character - Lucy/Nyu. The missing parts were added. This resulted in a more or less coherent story about kawaii psycho mutant killers with horns, suspiciously reminiscent of nekomimi. True, everything was done in a hurry, and the plot turned out to be full of holes and bugs, and the dismemberment was rather dull.

As for templates and cliches, the image of the Unknown Shit™ (most often aliens from outer space or by-products of some scientific research) seeking to destroy humanity has long been successfully used in popular culture. And Elfen Lied is no exception in this regard. As for the main characters, little kawaii girls who kill every living thing in their path are present in slightly less than all of Ilya Masodov’s books, although the creators of this anime are unlikely to have read them.

It is unknown whether SRSG specialists took part in the creation of the series. However, it is the anime, and not the manga, that is the reason for the ongoing holy wars, meaningless in essence, because in the plot of EL there are not only many unsaid moments that everyone thinks out in their own way, but also simply outright blunders and lack of thought. A typical example is the ending: apparently, the anime was so fucked up by the creators that they stupidly ended the story, when in the original there were still several years of plot and 100,500 corpses left before the end (spoiler:

They don’t finish off Lyuska, but they do give her a fair beating.
)
.

Also, the creators of this work did a good job of trolling their colleagues. It's no secret that one of the diseases of anime is often an overabundance of pathos, namely, the dominance of characters who like to dilute the course of particularly intense battles or other dynamic events with tons of bullshit about the mortal, the existing, the eternal and the beautiful, as a result of which the battle itself often turns into a costume a show that is comparable to watching a particularly interesting prime-time television program. In the Song, a character who wants to make a pathetic speech, as a rule, divides by zero before he manages to utter at least half a phrase, and sometimes as soon as he opens his mouth (if, again, he manages to open it). This approach to storytelling is, albeit small, a plus that distinguishes this work from similar creations with a similar plot and atmosphere.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the introductory screensaver, and specifically the song “Lilium”. There are two versions of the song: the regular version, performed by a solo female voice, and the extended version, performed by a male choir. The lyrics of this song are a mixture of passages from the Bible, Gregorian chants Ave mundi spes Maria

in the language of Ecclesiastical Latin and the Greek chants of the Kyrie.
The melody itself was written by racially Nippon composers Kayo Konishi and Yukio Kondo specifically for this anime, since the “Elf Song” itself, which was present in the manga (about an elf who confused the words “Elf” and “Eleven” ( elf
)
), for some reason did not suit the creators of the “Song” as anime and they decided to create their own melody. Proof. As a result, “The Elvish Song” was left without an Elven song, but with “Lily”. By the way, the resulting creation is very much loved by the adherents of the Church of Christ and is performed without restraint by church choirs (examples one, two, three), which is very satisfying if you remember how many people chopped Lucy and Co. into cabbage. Although where do they care about Himself? So it goes.

Ratings

Characters – 7.0. Among the characters, only two turned out to be interesting (Lucy and the military Bando), all the rest were predictable, fanservice and stereotyped.

Plot – 8.0. It may swing slowly, but closer to the middle it accelerates and becomes truly interesting.

Drawing – 7.0. Quite decent backgrounds and close-ups. But the character design and animation don't allow me to give it a higher rating.

Music – 7.0. The opening and ending music turned out great, but there is very little background music, and it is often repeated.

Atmosphericity – 6.0. For a very long time I could not get into the right mood, because the cruel and erotic moments do not fit well into the narrative and are repulsive with their obsession.

[edit] A little about the plot

Besides, now he's got a really cute nickname — Torso-Boy

« A kind and naive girl, Lucy, approaches her adult uncles and asks: “Where, exactly, are the elves?” Adult uncles are bursting with shame, since there are no elves in the series. »
— Brief description of the plot of EL from Absurdopedia

On a fine spring morning, a humanoid body emerges from the sea towards a couple of students peacefully grazing on the beach: naked, with horns, tits and a broken head. The body is very scared, frozen and communicates with the world with the help of a single syllable - “”. Students, don’t be fools, show miracles of civic consciousness: they take the body to their home, hide it from human eyes and, most importantly, from the police, who are looking for this body as a “missing girl.” The girl, unsurprisingly, turns out to be a completely fucked-up psychotic mutant killer, suffering, on top of everything, from a split personality due to a severe head injury.

[edit] Who are Diclonius?

Fanservice?
In my EL? Diclonius are mutants who, as a result of their mutation, have developed paranormal abilities, namely:

  • Vectors are several invisible hands reaching a length of 2 meters or more. In practice, classic telekinesis with a limited range, which can be used to tear off arms or stop a burst of Kalash fire. The power is limited (it does not strengthen a bullet from an anti-tank rifle), but it grows over time; the number of hands is arbitrary. (spoiler:
    By the end of the mango-opupea, Lucy, before she is cut out, will become so severe that her vectors will be able to reach the opposite point of the planet, which, however, will not help her much
    )
    .
  • The ability to feel each other at a distance - one feels not only the very presence of one’s own kind, but also one’s character. CHSH, Lucy and Nyu feel like two different personalities.
  • The ability to infect others - if a man communicates with Diclonius vectors and survives after this, all his children will be Diclonius.

All Diclonius are divided into true and silplite, born from infected people. Trus can reproduce in the traditional way. But there are only two of them - the main character and her brother, who is absent from the anime. Silplits are childless, but thanks to the infection, over 9000 of them were born.

Most Diclonius are characterized by hatred of people, OBVM, and periodic bouts of uncontrollable psychosis, which often lead to dire consequences. This condition can be cured either through BPPE or another less humane method. (spoiler:

The true ending, however, is sad: after Lucy drank, smart-ass doctors invented a vaccine and established a worldwide birth ban, eliminating the mutation forever
)
.

[edit] Heroes

Nana
Kota

- the main character, one of those students who finds Nyu on the beach at the beginning of the series.
Characterized by unique dullness and partial lack of memory. As the series progresses, Nu ends up in various ridiculous situations. Yuki often gives him a hard time. By a strange coincidence, he is the only one who can switch Lucy from walking chainsaw mode back to cuteness mode (and it’s Lucy’s cuteness, not Nyu), which, by the way, Lucy herself, as a rule, is not able to do. (spoiler:
And the answer is simple: in her distant childhood, Lucy, in a fit of diclonic rage, cut down almost his entire family in front of Kota, simply because she was jealous of him for Yuka. After that, for 8 years she was sickened by what she had done, enduring the hardships and deprivations of laboratory research just for the sake of to apologize. And she did apologize.
)
Nu/Lucy

(moon. ニュ/ルシ) - the main character suffers from a split personality. Nyu is a kawaii, good-natured and brainless creature who loves to wash floors and grab the tits of her cohabitants. Lucy is a depressed sociopath, really gone, capable of cutting out her family without a twinge of conscience, so that she has a place to spend the night, and for love experiences. He is the only canonical Diclonius, unlike other half-breed Silpelites, and, as a result, has a number of attributes associated with the status, such as the ability to reproduce and normal development, in comparison with Silpelites. The only Diclonius to use firearms, which adds some extra flair to her.

Yuka

- Kouta's cousin, who for unknown reasons looks like his twin sister.
Kinship (spoiler:
although in Japan, just like in Russia, it is allowed to marry cousins
)
, however, does not prevent her from being in love with the latter and clearly hinting that she wants sex with him and
(spoiler:
that she does succeed, judging by by the presence of Kota's daughter, who clearly resembles her mother in the epilogue
)
. Kota is jealous of Nyu. As a result, he comes to the conclusion that Kota is a complete idiot and in general should be pitied. The only one of the characters retained her sanity, not knowing about the fucked-up happening around her.

Nana

(moon. ナナ) is a kawaii Diclonius girl who, by the will of fate, lives in the main character’s house. She spent almost her entire life in a laboratory where evil scientists performed sadistic experiments on her. However, this only affected her character in terms of increased naivety and ignorance of the real world. She was hired to capture Lucy, but she tore off her arms and legs. Unlike Lucy, Nana is not going to take revenge on anyone for her childhood and does not want to kill anyone at all, although at times she goes crazy just as much as the main character.

  • In some clippings of the black and white manga, Nana is mistaken for Ayanami Rei.
  • Nana is Kochan's mascot.
  • Nana also means “seven”. Pun intended - she was silpelite number 7.

Nu
Mayu

— a homeless schoolgirl who has joined Kota’s harem. She ran away without pants from the house where her stepfather loved her in different positions and her own mother hit her in the face, and settled on the beach with the same homeless dog. Picked up and adopted by Kota and Yuka. In the series, he plays the role of a peacemaker, not allowing two horned psychopaths to tear each other apart.

Kurama

- director of a special prison where Diclonius are kept and inhumane experiments are performed on them.
Expert on pediatric euthanasia. So severe that he fucked Lucy and even survived. At one time, he provided Nana with moral support, which explains her peacefulness. In fact, the most adequate character on the part of scientists treats the Diclonius as living people, cares about Nana and did not plan to deal with all this crap at all if he had not been misled, which he realized too late. (spoiler:
In the anime, he dies heroically along with Mariko, while in the manga he somehow manages to become a couple with Nana, despite the fact that she considers him his father
)
.

Mariko

- a particularly strong Diclonius with a whole bunch of vectors, a loli and the only daughter of Kurama. She spent her whole life in a large metal container under heavy security, as a result of which she can’t even really walk. The most fucked up of all the stags. Unlike Lucy, she clearly enjoys killing everything that moves. In order to somehow control Mariko's behavior, several bombs were sewn into her body.

Bando

- Japanese Airborne Forces, whose arsenal is dominated by BBPE and a clear desire to kill all people.
At the same time, his combat training, to put it mildly, leaves much to be desired. Perhaps the most unlucky character: in less than fourteen episodes he managed to be shot by Lucy, blinded by her and deprived of his right hand, almost losing his own dignity, and also beaten by Nana. In the manga he turned out to be an even bigger loser: he lost his second arm and the entire lower part of his body. (spoiler:
And still survived
)

Characters

A : Wow, just look at these characters! Little girls with a difficult past who finally find a home for themselves. This is so cute! One of them actually looks like a cat with ears, because the only word she can say is “Nu”. How can you not be inspired by something like this? The writers very competently present scenes from the characters’ pasts, gradually revealing more and more details from their lives. In my opinion, the main value of the story being told lies in the relationships between the characters, because they push the plot forward, leading to unexpected plot twists.

B : Yes, the Diclonius girls turned out to be interesting characters, they were given decent stories, and in general they act as cute, damaged creatures who turned into cold-blooded killers. However, this doesn't cover the fact that the other main characters - Kouta and Yuka - are extremely annoying characters. Kouta is just another ordinary schoolboy, on whom all the girls around him hang themselves for his kindness. Yuka is a childhood friend who is in love with the main character and has a “rich” inner world. Such characters appear in every second anime, and I'm already sick of them. It’s especially disgusting how the characters begin to portray some semblance of a family: kind dad Kouta, strict mom Yuka, and little Diclonius children. As soon as all these characters appear in the frame at the same time, a tsunami of cloyingness hits you, and you get the feeling of a cheap comedy in which kids do all sorts of stupid things, dad scolds them for it, mom calms him down, everyone laughs and rejoices. A family idyll in the middle of a bloodbath, how sweet.

Well, what did you want - even the dumbest American action movie can’t do without some instructive idea, and what’s worse about anime?

It must be said that the seekers of the “deeper meaning” in EL are right about at least one thing - despite the fact that the series does show quite a lot of nudity and dismemberment, that is not the point of it. Also, most of the nudity there is completely asexual, and the meat is pretty bland. Nevertheless, especially sensitive characters with a rich inner world are not recommended to watch EL, and even more so for intellectual snobs from the anime crowd. If you just want to watch a moderately brutal, moderately “snotty” and somewhat beautiful anime - try it, you might like this gore. Well, if you are a true anhuman and a sociopath, then Sotona himself told you to watch Elfen Lied - you will clearly find a lot in common with yourself in the Diclonius.

Panache

As for drawing, the opposites no longer fought in me, because the situation is obvious. It's been twelve years since 2004, so it's no surprise that Elfen Lied's art feels dated. This is especially evident in the appearance of the characters: they are drawn rather roughly, and their faces clearly lack small details. In addition, the characters move jerkily, and their animation leaves much to be desired. On the other hand, the backgrounds and close-ups turned out decently, and even now they look acceptable.

[edit]Gokukoku no Brynhildr

While fans were catching lulz from such unusual endings of the manga, comrade Lynn dashed off his new creation - Brynhildr in the Darkness. The plot, in general, remained the same: a magical girl with amnesia, evil scientists, secret government laboratories with good doctors, the main character is a virgin womanizer, surrounded by a whole bunch of guys with watermelon-like boobs and superpowers, and even amputee girls. There is a moderate presence of guro, ecchi and psychological trauma from childhood, threaded through the plot. It’s just that we won’t see any juicy fights between fans and opponents of the subject, as was the case with Elvish Lied. To the question - is it worth reading/watching, we will answer: if you liked the Song, then you can take a look, hoping to see something similar. In 2014, an anime was created based on the manga, however, as in the case of the song, it was castrated (spoiler:

Of the nine volumes, only incomplete three have been filmed
)
