Review of the anime Byousoku 5 Centimeter (“Five Centimeters per Second”, “5 Centimeters per Second”)

At what speed do sakura petals fall? If you know the answer to this question, then you have already experienced one of the most controversial sixty minutes of your life. Sixty minutes that are filled with more meaning than most serial anime combined. Sixty minutes that can radically change your life: they will either trigger a series of depressive thoughts or serve as an impetus for change. In this review, I will introduce you to the most famous and successful creation of Makoto Shinkai called Byousoku 5 Centimeter ( “Five Centimeters per Second”). I warn you right away: there will be a lot of pretentious arguments in the review, be prepared for this.

Brief information

Five Centimeters Per Second is a full-length anime released in 2007 by the famous director Makoto Shinkai, just over an hour long. Like most of his other creations, this anime was released by CoMix Wave Films . It is based on an original script written by Makoto Shinkai himself. Subsequently, light novels and manga were released based on the anime. A distinctive feature of Makoto Shinkai can be called his desire to do all the work on the anime himself - he has a hand in animation, music, script writing, and directing. It’s amazing how versatile a person he is, and how deep and insightful things he manages to create over and over again.

As I remember now: for the first time I saw “ Five Centimeters Per Second ” on TV, it was then shown on the 2x2 TV channel. I was just clicking the remote control, and suddenly I came across something unusual: a story about how a very young boy and girl exchange letters with each other. Insanely beautiful pictures with voiceover. I watched for ten, fifteen minutes... and switched to another channel. What can I say - he was stupid, he was small. “Five centimeters per second” will not be understood or perceived properly by everyone. This anime needs to be watched with proper mental preparation. The creations of Makoto Shinkai are not suitable with popcorn or chips in order to laugh and spend a couple of evenings watching. No, they are intended for something completely different. They make you think about those things that the average person is afraid to think about at all or is not able to think about in principle.

Explanation of the meaning of the ending of the film "5 Centimeters Per Second"

Makoto Shinkai's anime “Five Centimeters Per Second” is a film with deep meaning. Man cannot turn back time. This picture is about how every moment in life is priceless and will never happen again. However, people often forget about this. Many people simply don’t realize that their time is limited. They waste precious seconds on meaningless things, worries, doubts. What message did the director of the anime film put into the ending of his work “5 Centimeters Per Second”?

Time moves inexorably forward. The pace of life is constantly accelerating. In pursuit of material wealth, people doom themselves to a boring, gray existence. They are not interested in anything except money. The creators of the film “Five Centimeters Per Second” encourage everyone to stop and look around. Each period of time is unique and beautiful in its own way. No one can make the clock hands freeze in place. But under no circumstances will they move faster.

The author of the project paid great attention to details. People must learn to pay attention to the beauty of nature that surrounds them. Heavenly blue, unique landscapes. An atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Children look at the world with wide open eyes. They want to try everything and be on time everywhere. They have not yet learned the meaning of material wealth and money. They don't need it. Children know how to find joy even in ordinary things. But time waits for no one.

The meaning of the ending of the film “5 Centimeters Per Second” is that everything should always happen on time. No important matters should be postponed “for later”. Otherwise, you may not have time, otherwise it will be too late. This happened with the characters in the anime film. The heroes made plans and foresaw their future. But they forgot to just live. Their existence was devoid of happiness, joy, bright moments.

It was no coincidence that the filmmakers showed a train in the film. This image reminds everyone that in life people are like passengers. They are temporarily on this planet. And it is very important to fill your life with meaning, so that later you don’t have to regret the days spent aimlessly.

The ending of the film was extremely emotional. Neither work nor personal relationships brought happiness to the main character. He never found his calling. And then he sees Her. Memories from his carefree childhood immediately flashed in his head. This girl became his ideal, the ultimate dream. Perhaps it was next to her that he would be happy. But he never dared to take the first step towards her. The girl also remembered this young man with warmth. However, their paths diverged and they could never be together again. With age, views and life priorities change. As the years pass, a person may become increasingly dissatisfied with his unhappy existence. And one day you will want to change everything, but there will not be enough time for this.

The final episodes of the film “5 Centimeters Per Second” clearly demonstrate the value of time. Time is the only thing that cannot be returned. This is the most valuable thing everyone has. Therefore, it cannot be wasted. Time is a non-renewable resource. You should think many times before taking an uninteresting job or communicating with a person who is unpleasant to you. You should not get upset over trifles or waste minutes on empty talk. A person should live his life in such a way that he remembers every day with gratitude, and does not regret missed opportunities.

A strong life-affirming film forces every viewer to pay attention to their life. It doesn't matter what others say behind your back. You should not become a source of singing and rumors. The main thing is to listen to yourself and understand what you really want. The protagonist of the film “5 Centimeters Per Second” realized this too late. He missed his bird of happiness. Why did it happen? The character did not attach much importance to time. He took everything for granted. But suddenly a realization came. Sometimes this is not enough to completely change your life. However, a person must try. Many people know the expression: “It’s never too late to start.” There is some truth in this phrase. But do not forget that external circumstances often interfere.

At the end of the film, the heroes did not become life partners. Each of them dreamed of this, but fate decreed differently. The main idea of the ending of the film “Five Centimeters Per Second” is that you need to use every chance to become happy that life provides. There may not be any other possibilities.

Plot

The anime tells three separate, but at the same time interconnected stories. If you ask me to characterize “Five Centimeters Per Second” in one sentence, then I will answer without hesitation, because the answer is given to us in the extended title of the anime: “A chain of stories about their remoteness.”

1). Excerpt about cherry blossoms – Okasho. This is a story about two elementary school students: Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara. Their families often change places of residence, and the children often have to move from one school to another. Therefore, when Akari was transferred to the class in which Takaki studied, they quickly hit it off and became friends. They spent almost all their free time together, reading in the library or walking to their favorite places. Takaki and Akari had become very close, so the news that Akari would have to move again came as a shock to them. Since then, letters have remained the only means of communication for them. Simple paper letters. They met one day when they were in middle school: Takaki came to Akari by train. “At that moment I clearly felt what eternity means... What the heart means... What the soul means... It was as if I realized everything that had happened to me over thirteen years. But the moment passed, and I became unbearably sad .

The first story is actually the saddest . The story is about how kindred spirits who found themselves in children were separated by a series of circumstances that, due to their young age, they could not cope with. They never told each other everything they thought and needed to talk about. They never exchanged their last letters with each other. Who is to blame for this? I think both. Or perhaps no one. You never know how your life will change from one single decision.

2). Cosmonaut - Cosmonaut. Takagi is a high school student. He goes to classes, the archery section, and stares blankly into the distance. Meanwhile, his classmate Kanae Sumida, a modest, insecure girl, falls in love with him. Years pass, with very little time left before graduating from high school, Kanae decides to confess her feelings to Takagi...

Makoto Shinkai calls this part of the story his favorite, and I agree with him. These twenty minutes brought me the greatest pleasure. But there is a slight illogicality here, or a deliberate omission - call it what you want. I still don’t understand what prevented Takagi from finding out Akari’s mobile phone number by simply sending her a paper letter and receiving an answer. The only reasonable explanation is that they lost each other’s contacts due to constant moving, and despite their best efforts, they could not contact each other.

3). 5 centimeters per second - Byosoku 5 Senchimetoru. Years have passed. Takagi graduated from university and entered a large company as a programmer. The days fly by one after another, gray and lifeless. And he constantly dreams of the same dream - how he and Akari are sitting in a field, and together admiring the expanses spread out in front of them. “When you live an ordinary life, melancholy permeates everything. Yellowing pages of books, a toothbrush in the bathroom, messages on a mobile phone... All these years I have been running forward, trying to catch something important, something unattainable. And it seems that in the end I was left with nothing.” He breaks up with his girlfriend of the last three years, quits his job, and passes a girl he recognizes as Akari at a railroad crossing. Just as their eyes are about to meet, a train passes along the tracks, followed by another, and then Takagi sees that Akari has already left. He smiles, and with a smile he goes to meet his future, leaving the past behind him.

Yes, that's exactly how I interpret the last story. Some may disagree with my vision, but I am still confident that Takagi's smile in the last seconds of the film signifies his final recognition that the past must remain in the past, and that it is time to stop tormenting himself with consoling, but no less bitter memories.

Cartoon 5 centimeters per second

"Five Centimeters Per Second" (Japan, 2007). A sad but beautiful story about first love, evoking good, pleasant memories...

Hello…

You know, I thought that, having become acquainted with Makoto Shinkai’s work “The Garden of Words,” I would want to evaluate something else... After all, this director and screenwriter has his own special style, unlike other authors... And this arouses interest...

By the way! I would not say that he imitates the great Hayao Miyazaki... There is a completely different style, drawing, character of the production... But taking note will not harm anyone. So, of course, you can learn from the greats...

"Five centimeters per second" ...

“Five Centimeters Per Second” is 3 short stories with a total duration of 63 minutes, interconnected and united by one theme, the theme of first love...

“The Cherry Blossom Passage” is the very first story that introduces us to the main character Takaki Tono (voice: Kenji Mizuhashi), a simple, quiet, sweet and calm schoolboy who loves books and is friends with a girl who is just as sweet and pleasant as him. himself, Akari Shinohara (voiced by Yoshimi Kondo in the Cherry Blossom Passage and Ayaka Onoe in the Five Centimeters Per Second series). The film tells about the beginning of their friendship, the reason for separation and the road adventures of a selfless guy...

The second story, called “Cosmonaut,” is filled more with philosophy than with romance. Here Takaki is already a high school student, and we see that due to his parents moving, he is trying to cling to a past that is no longer there... In addition to him, there is a new face in the series - Kanae Sumida (voice: Satomi Hanamura), Takaki's classmate, a gentle and pleasant girl who is secretly in love with him... But the love triangle is not destined to come true, and the guy helps his new friend overcome her various fears and troubles in life rather than becoming her loved one...

Well, the third part - “Five Centimeters Per Second” shows us the adult Takaki and Akari. They live, work, learn from their mistakes. But separately. Everyone has their own life. And right now, more than ever, they remember that wonderful childhood, when the trees were big, the sky seemed so bottomless, and sakura leaves flew to the ground five centimeters per second... Will they meet and, if so, what will this meeting mean to them? will bring, you will find out by watching the whole story, to the end...

A very beautiful picture... Full of kindness, tenderness, childhood... Of course, a love story in cinema is not a new topic, but what is important here is how to teach it... Nature views, road adventures, moments of waiting, the first kiss, parting, moving, finding oneself and attempts to look into the future... Torment, doubts, hopelessness... New meetings, people, busyness... And a moment... That very moment when everything seemed to be different...

Heavily filmed...

Director: Makoto Shinkai. Screenplay: Makoto Shinkai, Steve Foster, Alex Von David. Composer: Tenmon.

I am grateful to this team for being able to take me back to childhood and remind me of some pleasant pages from life...

First love... Feelings of joy and magic... Bitterness and heavy defeats...

Experience and memory... For life...

Panache

This... this... this is something incredible . I'm afraid I don't have enough eloquence to describe all the beauty and uniqueness of the drawing in “Five Centimeters per Second.” Only a person who put his whole soul into his work could draw this. Lifeless plains, a lonely train in a snowstorm, a mighty and tender sakura tree by the window, and endless expanses of heaven - every frame is literally permeated with a special, unique atmosphere. It’s as if you find yourself in those very places, as if you’re standing next to the heroes and looking into the distant sky, where a lone rocket flies off to plow the boundless space.

All of Makoto Shinkai's works pay special attention to trains and skies, but in Five Centimeters Per Second his love for them reached its apogee. Just imagine - such image quality was achieved back in 2007! Incredible, simply incredible. As always, many of the landscapes were drawn from photographs of real places located in Japan. However, even screenshots will not convey all the beauty of the drawing; this must be seen in dynamics. One hour of aesthetic pleasure is guaranteed to you: you will feel like boys who walked into a candy store, where in every corner there is a candy in a bright package that you just want to take and eat.

“5 centimeters per second” – whose speed is this? About the masterpiece of Japanese animation

Five centimeters per second - this is the speed at which sakura petals fall... In the life of every person, there comes a moment when you need to part with a loved one, be it a friend, loved one or parent. The endless desire of a person to live better forces him to leave places dear to his heart, go to other cities and countries, thereby destroying his old life.

The same thing happened to the heroes of the film, ordinary schoolchildren - the dreamy Takaki and the cheerful Akari. Being one, they had to separate due to their parents moving. Cheerful, carefree days turn into endless letters, kilometers of dusty roads, rare meetings and an ever-growing desire to be together. Physical distance becomes an even greater obstacle when friendship and spiritual kinship develop into love. They say that love overcomes any difficulties, but is it true?

The author divided the film into 3 episodes, thereby roughly outlining the plot, climax and denouement that exist in any scenario.

Episode 1

- “The Chosen Cherry Blossoms” - acts as a plot, this is the story of kinship and separation of the main characters. The distance is increasing, as is the desire to be together. The ability of children to become attached to each other and to love absolutely sincerely and strongly is especially emphasized. From the first minutes, the viewer is overwhelmed by the feeling of the incredible “reality” of the film - perfectly drawn landscapes immerse you in an atmosphere of beauty, lightness and thoughtfulness, and the thoughts and feelings of the main characters are immersed inside, into the very depths of their experiences, and the plot itself is so vital that the viewer will surely recognize in one of the heroes himself.

Episode 2

— “Cosmonaut” is a kind of culmination of the film. A person’s aspirations can be as endless as the flight of a spaceship into space, and sometimes as mysterious as the person himself. The experiences of a certain Kanae, who is secretly in love with Takaki, who, in turn, is faithful to Akari, make the viewer “torn” between the feelings of all three heroes. This is another distinctive feature of this anime - a multifaceted look at current situations, when attention is not focused on one character. In this case, it is difficult to determine who is the main character - Takaki or Akari - and whether Kanae can be classified as the main characters.

Episode 3

represents the denouement of all events.

The end of the film is structured in such a way that it gives the audience food for thought: the denouement turns out to be an even more confusing chain of, at first glance, unrelated events, but, nevertheless, the drama is more than obvious, which does not allow us to classify this film as a work “without end”, when the outcome is thought out by the viewer. Perhaps many will be disappointed by the last episode of the film, but others will be pleased with its realism.

There is not a drop of optimism in it, as well as pessimism - this is precisely the “golden mean” that makes the film special, because it is very difficult to give romance a touch of reality. Most creations in this style are either loaded with excessive drama or end with a “happy ending”, so a confident thought constantly spins in the viewer’s head while watching - “this is a movie, everything should be fine in the end.”

There is no action, no special action... just snippets of thoughts, emotions, places and events. This is a reflective film reflecting the feelings of a lonely, sad, waiting, thirsting, living person. However, this work is so captivating that you simply cease to feel the space in which you are, not to mention the absence of thoughts about the possible outcome of the story.

Everything about this film is great, from the script to the musical score. Excellent drawing, breathtaking landscapes, maximum vitality plus an abundance of feelings and emotions: kinship, spiritual closeness, unrequited love, desire, patience, hope, doom, despair, sadness, struggle with fate. This anime will not leave anyone indifferent, especially those people who had to go through the same thing as the characters in the film.

Five centimeters per second is the speed at which hearts move closer and further apart...

Music

Light and gentle piano motifs. Cheerful, life-affirming guitar melodies. The sounds of footsteps crushing snow in absolute silence. The wind, the chirping of crickets and the singing of birds. It seems like little things, but when they come together into a single whole, and supported by an impeccable picture, they form a spectacle of exceptional beauty. A colossal amount of work was done with sound. Not a single extra song, not a single extra sound. Everything is clear, organized like clockwork, but at the same time very warm and sincere. You can just close your eyes and listen. And then you will be completely immersed in the atmosphere of “Five Centimeters per Second”.

Plot[edit]

The anime itself consists of three parts, combined into a single whole and covering a ten-year period in the life of the main character Takaki Tono. The action takes place in Japan in the nineties.

Excerpt about cherry blossoms[edit]

The first story tells about the school life of the heroes - Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara. A close friendship developed between the children, and despite the ridicule of their classmates, they spend all their time together. However, at some point, Akari and her family were forced to move from Tokyo to the small town of Iwafune in Tochigi Prefecture. Despite the separation, Takaki and Akari continued to communicate through letters, and at some point, Takaki decides to meet with his lover. During this period, heavy snow falls on Japan, causing Takaki's train ride to be greatly delayed, but Akari waits patiently for him. As a result, the young people manage to meet and spend the night together at the station, despite the cold.

Cosmonaut[edit]

Some time later, Takaki enters high school on the island of Tanegashima, where the space center is located. On his first day, he meets a girl, Kanae Sumida, who almost immediately falls in love with him. However, Takaki is still in love with Akari, so he treats Kanae exclusively as a friend. Kanae, seeing this, does not dare to confess her feelings to him, although she tries to spend all her time with him. At the end of her studies, she plans to confess her feelings to him, but in the end she does not dare to do so. At some point, Takaki breaks off all contact with Akari.

5 centimeters per second[edit]

Takaki, continuing to love Akari, gradually falls into a severe black depression. He breaks up with his girlfriend of three years, and then, having gotten rid of his goal in life to achieve something great, he quits his job and starts drinking and smoking a lot. Akari, meanwhile, is preparing to marry another man and move back to Tokyo. One day, Takaki walks along the street where he and Akari once admired the cherry blossoms. A girl passes by, and Takaki, having crossed the railway, realizes that it is Akari. The young people turn around, but at that moment they are separated by a passing train. And as he drives away, Takaki sees that Akari has already left.

A series of thoughts inspired by watching (a moment of pathos)

In the heart of every person lives a disease called fear . I have never met fearless people in my life. Some are afraid of being rejected, some are afraid of leaving their comfort zone, some are afraid of making a mistake and seeming stupid. All these fears overlap each other and make a person deeply unhappy. No, he himself can consider himself the happiest person in the world, being driven into his cozy, limited little world. Home-work, work-home - many are content with such a life. And only a few are able to overcome their fear, are able to look behind the mysterious veil of non-existent restrictions, and burst into an unfamiliar, but endless and beautiful world. Those who succeed can call themselves truly happy. And someone will remain content with little, not even realizing what he could achieve if he left his comfort zone. But the hardest thing is for those who guess and want to overcome the boundaries, but cannot overcome their fear.

Anime characters faced similar problems. Who knows what would have happened if Takagi had not lost his letter, or if Akari had given him his. Who knows how Kanae's life would have turned out if she had had a heart-to-heart talk with Takagi. We drive ourselves into limits, making excuses in every possible way. “I don't deserve him. His gaze is directed far into the sky, and I’m just walking on the ground” - isn’t it a stupid excuse? If you don't try, you will never know a person's feelings. And you will only have to console yourself with your invented excuses and remember the past with warmth, while living in the gray present.

Characters[edit]

  • Takaki Tono
is the main character of the anime. As a child, he spent all his time with Akari, but due to a number of circumstances they had to separate. I corresponded with her for a while, but then stopped doing so. However, he never stopped loving her, because of this he became increasingly depressed, broke up with his unloved girl and quit his job.
  • Akari Shinohara
is Takaki's classmate. She was forced to move with her parents to another prefecture. Despite this, they continued to communicate, but at some point they stopped correspondence. At the end, Akari is shown preparing to marry another man.
  • Kanae Sumida
is Takaki's classmate in Tanegashima, enjoys surfing and attends an archery club with Takaki. She is deeply in love with Takaki, but still does not dare to confess her feelings to him, realizing that he will always love only Akari.

Ratings

Characters – 10.0. Three characters. But with just three characters, Makoto Shinkai tells you more than hundreds of characters in any shonen could tell you.

Plot – 10.0. One hour, three stories. So simple, but at the same time so difficult.

Music – 10.0. Colossal work with sound, manifested in the smallest details.

Drawing – 10.0. Words cannot describe what appears before your eyes. This is something incredible. And this is a drawing from 2007!

The embedded meaning is 10.0. Some may call the story told sentimental rubbish, unworthy of attention. For such people, I have only one question - why the hell did you even start watching Makoto Shinkai?

10.0/10
